Chinese Landmark and Dynasty discussion

Hello there!

Just wanted to kick off this discussion because I feel like this must be said. In the stress test, the Chinese Landmarks were awful compared to what English, HRE and Abbasids offered. Not saying they weren't useful , but the Age 3 and Age 4 Landmarks especially are complete trash if you compare them against the Age 3 TC Landmark for the English, the up to 900 coin/minute Religious Landmark of the HRE. Being able to build 2 trash Landmark doesn't make them any better. Imagine going fast Castle Age and unlocking the imperial spies ability only to find our your English opponent will be up in villagers for the rest of the game because he got a TC and you did not. As a general rule of RTS, you never want to be in the position where you are forced to make a play or fall behind, yet this is exactly what happens with the Chinese and their trash Landmarks. Close out the game or lose to overwhelming bonuses.

The fact that the Dynasty system removes access to previously unlocked buildings and units feels terrible and I hope the devs remove this. The fact that one bonus of the Age 4 Landmark for the Chinese is getting back access to previously unlocked Dynasty units is a complete joke. Imagine you pay extra just to get something back you already paid for.

Whats your opinion? Between the top stress test players, obviously no one was putting a lot of time into Chinese because they were the worst civ by far.

Hey!

Definitely felt that not just in terms of the landmark, but overall, that the Chinese were the weakest civ in the Stress Test. Didn't find many of the better players were having much success with them and they definitely need some buffs before launch to be viable. It might be that they buff the landmarks or nerf the others a little (though don't know how you can nerf a second TC exactly...)

Overall, I'd be very surprised if there are not changes to the Chinese civ before launch. That said, the devs have a basically impossible task making the civs totally balanced on day one. I don't see a way in which there won't be one or two civs totally unused in Genesis, and if anything it's more likely NOT to be Chinese, as at least there's been time for feedback and adjustments. Still preferable to there being a totally overpowered civ though.

An easy fix for the English TC Landmark would be to
  • reduce HP
  • increase the cost of Age 3, just like HRE has reduced cost of Age 4 when choosing the TC Landmark
  • increase train time of villagers when produced from the TC Landmark
  • nerf bow attack of the TC Landmark

A combination of these, or all of these, or something else that makes the TC less powerful or more expensive than a normal TC.

Agree, let's hope for some changes. They didn't feel absurdly weak, but few keys points could bring them back on par with the rest. Landmark is one thing (esp. LM for Castle Age are really lackluster compared to others), discounted 2nd landmark for dynasty bonus, and maybe some buff for CKN that were really underwhelming for their cost.
I guess we will know soon :)
